Sheldean 'still alive'

Johannesburg - Superintendent André Neethling, head of the investigating team searching
for Sheldean Human, 6, said on Tuesday that the child's mother, Elize, was not a suspect.

"(Her) mother is not a suspect, she's our chief witness. She and Sheldean were
very close," he said.

Human said she had given a 17-page statement to the police on Monday.

"The police wrote down everything from the moment Sheldean and I woke up to the last
time I saw her."

Difficult case

According to Neethling, the police were scheduled to question and take statements on
Tuesday from all 41 people in the commune where Sheldean and her mother lived.

He believes Sheldean is still alive.

"Unfortunately, time is against us, but we hope and believe that we will find her.
We are working from 07:30 to 02:00 every day.

"We're all getting very little sleep because we realise how serious the case is."

Neethling said the police were co-operating with private investigator Henry d'Almeida
and his team.

"We have heaps of information that we're following up every day, and we depend on the
eyes and ears of the public to assist us in our search."

"This is a big, and difficult case."

He said there still were several people who would be questioned by police.
